Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Siva and Parvati, and the agraja(elder brother )of Lord Muruga. The divine story of Lord Ganesha is told in detail in Ganesha Purana, wherein it has been told Sri Parvati devi(the daughter of King Himavan and Queen Mynavathi)had the unique fragrance of sandalwood in her body.Once, she collected all the amount of chandana(sandalwood paste)from her body and made a beautiful statue of a young boy.
The statue was good, that she infused pancha pranam into the statue ultimately giving life to the statue which converted to a young ,dynamic and energetic boy with tremendous amount of physical strength.
Sri Parvati Devi appointed the boy as a watch keeper in Kailash and told the boy,not to allow anybody inside her private chambers when she was taking bath. The boy as usual was in guard and didnt allow anybody to enter. He stopped everyone from entering the divine abode of the mother goddess including Lord Shiva himself.Lord Shiva was extremely angry and a cold blooded war began against the young boy.All devas(celestial beings)right from Lord Indra,Lord Varuna, ashtadikpalakas, navagrahas, all joined Lord Shiva against the fierceful against the young boy.The young boy was supported by Goddess Mahakali,Mahasaraswati and Mahalakshmi,so he became invincible and could not be defeated at all.
Seeing such a difficult situation Bhagavan Vishnu, approached Lord Shanishwara, the great lord and requested him to cast his eyes on the trishul of Lord Shiva.Shaniswara did as he was told, and Lord Shiva was successful in severing the head of the young boy from his body.
This created great anger for Sri Parvathidevi.Parvathi devi in turn generated the dasha mahavidyas and was about to destroy the entire universe.Bhagavan Vishnu,in order to save the current tensed situation severed an elephant which was cursed and placed the head of that elephant on the body of the young boy ressurrecting him back to life.
Thereafter goddess parvati devi requested lord shiva to make the boy with an elephant face the lord of ganas,so from that day,the young boy came to be known as Ganesha,gana-eesha,lord of ganas. He was also given the agra puja status meaning that Lord Ganesha will be always worshipped before all gods and if anybody worships other god without worshipping lord ganesha,he will surely not get the benefits of worshipping his favourite diety.
Here we will be discussing all important festivals related to Lord Ganesha, all divyakshetrams of Lord Ganesha all over the world.
