Legend of the Temple:This temple is situated in the village of Mahad.In Dwaparayuga,King Bhishmak,was the ruler of the present day city called Nagpur in maharashtra.After tremendous amount of penance of Lord Ganesha with his ekadasakshara mantra Sri Ganesh,appeared before the king bhishmak and told that he will be blessed with 4 sons and a daughter who will be the incarnation of Goddess Mahalakshmi.
Thereafter was blessed with 4 sons and a daughter who was named Sri Rukmini who married Lord Krishna.In the meanwhile Rukhmangada happened to visit the forest nearby in an hunting expedition.At that time,he happened to visit the hermitage of Rishi Vachaknavi.On seeing Prince Rukmangadha,Srimati Mukunda,wife of rishi vachaknavi was attracted by the handsomeness of the prince and desperately fell in love with the prince.She expressed her desire of having a child by the prince,but the prince was virtuous in his deeds and therefore he refused straightly and told that not he cant succumb to such illegal desires of an woman.This hurted the sentiments of mukundha,but lord indra,the king of devas casted his evil eyes on mukunda and assumed the form of rukmangadha,and made mukundha pregnant.
As a result an illegal child was born to mukundha who was named "gruthsamada".As gruthsamadha grew and came to know about story behind his birth,was pain sticken in heart and worshipped lord vinayaka in bhadrakavana forest and also prayed to lord ganesha to absolve the sins of all the people who were involved in such a heinous crime.Lord Ganesha appeared before him and bestowed all the boons on him,stating that he will be worshipped as Varadavinayaka in that place and whoever visits this place and worships him,will be bestowed all boons one asks for.
